This genuine British WW1 SRD rum jar was sourced from a traditional brocante market in Authuille, northern France, a village in the heart of the Battlefields of the Somme. It is an authentic First World War stoneware military rum ration jar, originally used to transport rum supplies to British soldiers serving on the Western Front.

The letters SRD officially stood for Supply Reserve Depot, although soldiers also gave them humorous meanings such as “Seldom Reaches Destination”. These jars are now widely collected as First World War militaria and battlefield-related objects, with maker stamps adding particular interest for collectors. This example has a clear Pearson & Co of Whittington maker stamp.

Condition & authenticity

Good condition for an original item over 100 years old. These jars were utilitarian wartime vessels and were not made as decorative ceramics, so period manufacturing flaws, mould marks, firing imperfections and age-related surface wear are to be expected. This example has a clear Pearson & Co of Whittington maker stamp and was personally sourced at a traditional French brocante market in northern France, as is all our stock.
