This is a charming pair of vintage French cast iron shutter dog or shutter hold backs featuring a classical ladies head motif, (often known as Belgian Ladies) traditionally used to hold window shutters open in Belgian and France. These shutter catches were sourced at a French brocante and have a lovely decorative presence even when not in use.

Made from solid cast iron and painted gold, most likely at manufacture, these are vintage and likely date from the 1950s onwards. They have a balance of practicality and decoration and suit both period properties and country cottage interiors.

They display well-used vintage character while remaining structurally sound. One has a small nibble, shown clearly in the photographs, which does not detract from their overall appeal or function.
