A wonderful vintage French brocante find, this traditional wooden baguette box – known in France as a huche à pain – was designed specifically for storing the long baguettes that are such an iconic part of everyday French life.

Standing an impressive 83 cm high while measuring only 22 cm wide, it is a tall, narrow piece that brings authentic French farmhouse character without taking up a large amount of floor space. The pin wood is complemented by decorative wooden spindles and a traditional red and white gingham fabric panel.

Originally intended as practical bread storage, today it makes a particularly characterful addition to a farmhouse, country or French-inspired kitchen. Fill it with traditional long baguettes for the authentic look, or simply enjoy it as an unusual piece of French kitchenalia or a quirky umbrella stand in a hallway.

I sourced this piece personally from a French brocante shop.

Condition & authenticity

This is an authentic vintage piece sourced from a French brocante shop and is in good vintage condition.

There are the odd marks and signs of previous use here and there, as you would expect from a genuine vintage item. These form part of its history and character rather than detracting from its wonderfully rustic French farmhouse appearance.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
