An authentic vintage French brocante find, this charming Gabriel Fourmaintraux ceramic flour jar was made in Desvres in northern France and features the colourful hand-decorated rustic style of Fourmaintraux's popular Chaumière pottery.

The front is traditionally inscribed “Farine” — French for “Flour” — and decorated with stylised flowers and foliage in blue, olive green, orange and brown against a creamy white glazed background. A contrasting brown lid completes the classic French country kitchen design.

The underside carries the handwritten “G.F. Fait Main” mark associated with Gabriel Fourmaintraux of Desvres. “Fait Main” translates as “handmade”. Fourmaintraux was part of one of Desvres' best-known pottery families, and this colourful rustic style became particularly associated with the company's post-war production.

Personally sourced at a traditional French brocante, this is both an attractive piece of authentic French kitchenalia and a collectable example of mid-20th-century Desvres pottery.
