A vintage French brocante find, this charming three-piece Gabriel Fourmaintraux kitchen canister set was made in Desvres in northern France and comprises matching jars for Café, Sucre and Thé — Coffee, Sugar and Tea.

Each lidded ceramic jar features the colourful rustic decoration associated with Desvres pottery, with stylised blue flowers, olive-green foliage, warm orange and brown detailing, a distinctive blue fence motif and contrasting dark brown ceramic lids.

The undersides carry the handwritten “G.F. Fait Main” mark associated with Gabriel Fourmaintraux of Desvres, with “Fait Main” translating as “handmade”.

An interesting feature of the set is its graduated sizing. The Café jar is the largest, Sucre sits in the middle and Thé is the smallest. This reflects the importance of coffee in traditional French daily life, while tea historically played a much smaller role in France than it did in Britain.

Personally sourced at a traditional French brocante, this is a particularly attractive complete matching set for a kitchen dresser, pantry shelf or collection of French vintage pottery.
