6 French Knife Rests, Chopstick Rests, Porcelain Wedding Place Settings (A68)

This is a set of 6 shabby chic style cutlery rests which are also place settings. They are fairly rustic in design, not particularly finely finished, but fun pieces with a printed pattern; 3 are slightly paler in colour then the other 3. These are knife rests but also place settings which, as they ceramic, can be written on, or you could stick a little sticker on. There is a small basket shaped pot at the side which could be used for a small wedding favour, a tiny flower or after dinner mints. These  were bought at a traditional French brocante market and are in good condition with no chips; They would make a charming wedding gift and would add a French flair to any dining table.
A cutlery rest is a piece of kitchenware for resting a used piece of cutlery without touching the table to prevent cooking fluids from getting onto tables. The use of cutlery rests date from the early 18th Century and possibly the late 17th century. The gentry and the ruling classes sat down to a meal that could have up to 12 courses and apart from their hands, probably only had one knife and fork per person. To save soiling the table, or the tablecloth, the utensils required something to rest on that kept them off the table. As French meals often have multiple courses these are still frequently used across France in homes and occasionally restaurants.
As all the items we sell are bought from French brocante fairs, they are used or vintage and will often show minor signs of their previous life in a French home. This is part of their unique French shabby chic appeal and any significant flaws are always clearly highlighted in the photos and descriptions.
