WW1 British Brass Artillery Shell Primer Protector Cap Relic | Somme Battlefield Find

This is an authentic British WW1 brass artillery shell casing primer protector cap, sourced from a traditional French brocante fair in the Somme region — one of the most famous battlefields of the Great War.

These caps were designed to fit over the rim of an 18-pounder shell casing, protecting the fuse and base from accidental punctures during transit. With three fixed grooves and one spring-loaded arm, they locked securely onto the shell casing. Once removed before firing, many were collected for reuse — but some were discarded or lost in the field, only to resurface decades later.

A fascinating collectible for militaria enthusiasts and WW1 historians, and a tangible link to the Battlefields of the Somme.
