This is lovely vintage double sided French school history poster dating from around 1950s. This poster will have adorned a French classroom where it would have been used as a teaching aid. We have a number of different posters like this for sale all depicting different historical images. This is ONE poster which has a different image on each side. These were numbered when made, this one is 51 and 52. One side is titled 'La Marseillaise' which is the French national anthem.- number 51. This was the rallying call to the French Revolution and was adopted as "La Marseillaise" after the melody was first sung on the streets by volunteers from Marseille These fédérés were making their entrance into the city of Paris on 30 July 1792 after a young volunteer from Montpellier called François Mireur had sung it at a patriotic gathering in Marseille, and the troops adopted it as the marching song of the National Guard of Marseille - this appears to depict this event. . The other side is titled 'Le Peuple ne Vent Plus de Roi' which translates as 'The People No Longer Want a King'- number 52. The statement "The People No Longer Want a King" refers to the French Revolution, during which the French monarchy was abolished and France declared a republic. This is in a used condition with some small tears as shown - this is reflected in the price.
This has the publisher's name Cooperation Pedagogique Montmorillon Vienne printed on both sides. The Pedagogical Cooperation was created in 1946 by a teacher from Vienne, André Rossignol. He first published a pedagogical booklet sold by subscription to teachers in France and Belgium, covering multiple subjects including history. He moved to Montmorillon in 1953. Montmorillon is a Book town and it is branded as the "City of Writing". The name Editions Rossignol appeared in 1954 so these probably pre date this time. As early as 1948, André Rossignol published wall maps printed on both sides. Then colour posters were published in the form of a large format plate in a wooden frame. This poster comes from a series of numbered panels depicting the history of France, geography and natural sciences. Many of them illustrate scenes from everyday life and serve as speech boards for small classes. These series of pedagogical charts have left their mark on generations of teachers and students. This one is unframed, it will be shipped in a poster tube, not folded. This would add a fantastic French flair to any home or office and could be easily put in a frame.  All the items we sell are bought from French brocante fairs; as such they are used or vintage and will show signs of a previous life. This is part of their unique French shabby chic appeal.
