French Vintage Brass Pigeon Lamp, Wine Cellar Oil Lamp, Full Working Order (A70)

This is a small 23cm high French handheld brass vintners (wine makers) oil lamp made by the French maker Feutree. This small French Pigeon oil lamp has been polished to a lovely finish and would suit a country style home or cottage or be great on a barge or boat; it is in a good used condition as shown and in full working order. There is no liquid in this for safe posting. Just add lamp oil to the wadding inside and it is ready to use. This was bought at a traditional market in the North of France. These styles of lamps were traditionally used by 'Vintners' (French wine makers), in wine cellars where there would not have been power for lighting. These could be easily lit and then hung on hooks in the walls using the small handle. You just add any type of lamp oil to the wadding inside the base and then the wick can be lit. The wick is wound up and down using the handle on the side. These were marketed as the safest lamps at the time as if they were tipped over the oil didn't spill out. This is the subject of the French writing on the front. These are known as Pigeon lamps after the original company who made them. We cannot be sure how old this one will be, probably 30-40 years maybe more.
