French Antique Universal Fit Flat Copper Pan Lid, New Tin Lining (B9)

This is a charming French universal fit copper pan lid with a cast iron handle known as a flat lid - couvercle plât in French. This style of pan lid fits a pan up to its maximum diameter, which for this lid is any pan up to 19cm. The lid itself measures just under 20cm and has now been refurbished with traditional brand new hand wiped tin lining. You will be the first person to use this lining. This has the letters C & A stamped into the copper. Stamps with one or two words or letters are most likely an owner’s mark. Historically, antique and vintage tinned copper was fairly frequently stamped for its owner to keep track of it while it was being re-tinned or repaired, to help deter theft, and possibly just for pride. This practice of applying owner’s marks seems to have declined after WWII.This will date from around the 1900-1930s and would add a country French flair to any farmhouse style or cottage kitchen and whilst ideal for a hanging display, it can absolutely be used as a useful piece of everyday cookware. In French homes and restaurants, there will be one or 2 of these type of lids which can be used over a few different size pans. See our website for different sizes of these lids.
