6 French Vintage Dog Novelty Cutlery Rests, Gift for Dog Owner (A10)

This is a set of 6 vintage cutlery rests made by the Paris company Les Etains de la Fontaine. These knife rests are each marked on the base with the makers stamp and the quality stamp for tin which they are made from. Each one of these charming little rests is of a different dog. They come in their original cardboard box - THE BOX IS WORN AS SHOWN. This also has the makers leaflet with details of the making process in the box. These table settings are in a good used condition and were bought at a traditional French brocante market. A cutlery rest is a piece of kitchenware for resting a used piece of cutlery without touching the table to prevent cooking fluids from getting onto tables. The use of cutlery rests date from the early 18th Century and possibly the late 17th century. The gentry and the ruling classes sat down to a meal that could have up to 12 courses and apart from their hands, probably only had one knife and fork per person. To save soiling the table, or the tablecloth, the utensils required something to rest on that kept them off the table. As French meals often have multiple courses these are still frequently used across France in homes and occasionally restaurants. As all the items we sell are bought from French brocante fairs, they are used or vintage and will often show minor signs of their previous life in a French home.
